Roland TR-606 Drum Machines
Roland TR-606 drum boxes are simple and easy to use. Writing a pattern is just a matter of turning a knob and placing the hits at whatever step you want them to be. Track write function is also equally simple. In fact, it is so easy that you would hardly realize that you are writing a song!
The manual is well written and user friendly. An online manual is also available. The sixteen step buttons double as pattern select buttons, making your job of putting together a song a very easy one indeed. In addition, there are instrument mix knobs which are also easy to use, at any place and under whatever condition you may be in. This drum machine sounds as good as the analog versions.
The hi-hat sounds are excellent and they are very much like the hi-hat sounds on Musique Non Stop and Tour de France. It is absolutely perfect when used for electro. Though I would like the kick to be louder, I do like it as it is. But you can always get the loud effect if you may want it by turning up the accent, turning down the other drum sounds and turning up the volume.
I like the 808 sounds on electro records. Akika Baambata’s Planet has much less bottom end to it when played along with modern rap records. I do not consider the booming kicks and crashing cymbals as important as cowbells, clavs and sidestick sounds.

The 606’s ‘tom’ sounds and cymbals enhance the electro effect. This unit gives a good feel for the user. I like the precision I am able to get from its short decay of the rhythm sounds and its sequencer. Though there is no external device to change sounds, it is possible to use the accent to modify them if you have the knob fully turned.
You will see for yourself, for example, how different unaccented snare and accented snare sound. This is a very good buy for the price. Units with similar capabilities cost much more. If you have other pre MIDI gear which uses trigger ins or DIN sync, you cannot do better than acquiring this unit. It is so easy to transport that you can take your Roland TR drum box with you to jam sessions and have the time of your life!
